Folate, also known as "vitamin B9" is a generic term used for folate in foods, including folic acid.
Vitamin B9 and other B vitamins reduce the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular disease. Folate has also been found to have a positive effect in improving cognitive function, and lowers the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's.
Some studies associate low folate levels with depression and ineffective response to antidepressants.
Recognizing the health importance of vitamin B9, countries such as the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, South Africa have developed programs in which folic acid is added to foods such as bread, cereals and rice or pasta.
